Racialized Persona and Performance in the American Medicine Show

From The Book of Oedipus: A Religious Analysis of The Gospel at Colonus

You’re In Ruins: American Idiot as Post-9/11 Trauma Fiction

Patent medicine shows traveled the American West throughout the mid 19th through early 20th century to sell dubious cure-alls. This paper explores the distinctly racialized layers of performance used by the famous pitch-doctors of the Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company and Princess Lotus Blossom.

The Gospel at Colonus by Lee Breuer and Bob Telson is an adaptation of one of Sophocles’s most overlooked works, Oedipus at Colonus. The transformation from Greek drama to Gospel worship service draws out the biblical parallels found in the myth of Oedipus.

The 2010 Broadway musical based on the Green Day album of the same name follows three young men attempting to make meaning of their lives on very different paths. The story of the musical, along with the thematic content of the songs, fit the conventions of a specialized genre of fiction that emerged following the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.

My approach

I believe dramaturgy is the art of analysis that is actionable. I am driven by the ability of effective dramaturgy to shape and enhance the production of live theatre. In my work I always attempt to draw out the themes that the director most wants to emphasize with their production and allow that to guide the direction and presentation of my research. I have a highly interdisciplinary approach to each project that allows me to produce the best possible material suited to the specific production. I prefer to be involved from first concept through opening night to meet the evolving needs of a project.
